Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1 – Years 1 and 2
In Key Stage 1, we build on the skills that have been developed during the child’s time in Early Years Foundation Stage. Throughout the year we teach the core subjects of English and Maths. The foundation subjects; Science, Computing and Religious Education (RE), Design and Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and Physical Education (PE) are taught alongside the core subjects each week. Wherever possible they are incorporated into a common theme with key texts studied in English lessons, creating a well-rounded and complete education.
We are currently undertaking a curriculum review to ensure there is a clear sequence of learning across every subject taught.
Across the school, we foster a love of reading and the children are encouraged to read a range of books from an early age. Children in Key stage 1 are given two home reading books; one that matches their phonic knowledge for the child to read to an adult, and one that is chosen by the child as a reading for pleasure book to be read by an adult to the child.
Phonics is taught daily, using the Read, Write Inc. scheme, and is reinforced across the curriculum. Children are taught in Phonics groups according to their phonetical knowledge and are assessed regularly to ensure they are moved between groups at the right time for their learning.
